This is a self-ligating bracket made by Ormco. This company has launched this bracket onto the market supported by a previously unheard amount of advertising and numerous wonderful promises. In summary, with the Damon bracket it is no longer supposed to be necessary to sacrifice other teeth where there is severe crowding because this problem can now be solved by simply enlarging the dental arches. Treatment is supposed to be significantly faster than with other brackets and also less painful and, thanks to Damon, neither palatal expansion nor headgear needs to be employed. However, in spite of the fact that not one of these claims has yet been scientifically proved, they are still being put forward by avowed Damon-followers. Furthermore, a number of studies over the past couple of years have actually proved that treatment with these brackets is neither quicker nor less painful. However, these results have not been accepted by the community of people who support this appliance. And, in order to further increase the hype surrounding this product, a dedicated scientific “Damon Society” has even been set up in Germany,
In order to further increase the hype surrounding this product, a supposedly “scientific” Damon company was founded in Germany, whose purpose seems to be more marketing for the participating orthodontists. It will be interesting to see how the Damon bracket and the Damon Society will develop in the future.
