These are fixed, pointed metal elements which are usually attached to the inside of the lower incisors to prevent the tongue from getting stuck between the teeth. If the tongue does get into this position, it often results in an open bite which is difficult to treat and even more difficult to stabilize. Fortunately, most people affected by an open bite can live without any problems. Only extreme cases of open bite become problematical because the patient is only able to bite something off with their back teeth and have serious problems with chewing. Tongue Spikes Braces are a functional-orthodontic method of treatment, in the best sense of the term. In spite of what you may imagine, Tongue Spikes Braces hardly ever result in injuries because the tongue’s natural reflex is to avoid contact with any foreign objects. Whether they have any lasting effect remains to be seen. At the very least, they appear to be a promising kind of treatment that requires little cooperation from the patient.
